When choosing window coverings for your home there are many aspects to consider. Privacy is one of the most common reasons home owners require blinds or curtains in their home. If privacy is your main requirement then read on as here we list our top 5 options.

  1. Shutters – Plantation Shutters are the ultimate window covering for privacy for both day and night. With louvreable blades that can be positioned to get the best of light control and cooling breezes, shutters will provide you with a solution for all times of the day.
  2. Sheer and blockout curtains on a double rail – Sheer curtains will give you the daytime privacy and the filtered light you need without blocking your view. Blockout curtains will provide night time privacy as well as light and warmth control.
  3. Day/Night roller blinds – As with sheer and blockout curtains sunscreen fabric roller blinds will give you privacy during the day as well protection from the heat and glare. A blockout roller blind provides you with night time privacy and light control.
  4. Venetians – traditional Venetian blinds are still a winner providing privacy whilst allowing light and breeze to filter into your home. The blades can be moved to suit your requirements at different times of the day.
  5. Panel Glide Blinds in light filtering fabrics – A translucent fabric is a lovely option for providing privacy in an area that does not need to be darkened. Living areas that need privacy will sometimes need filtered light and sun control without making the room dark. Translucent fabrics provide privacy night and day.

COOL BLIND ROOM

New Cool Blind technology from Wilson Fabrics as the name says really is Cool. According to the brochure “Cool Blind is a unique Australian Made PVC Free screen fabric designed to meet the energy saving requirements of modern environmentally responsible building design, while still remaining stylish for any home or office. Surface temperature of Cool Blind remains on average 26% cooler than PVC screens in direct sunlight; reducing heat transfer into rooms, thereby reducing the demand on A/C systems”.

Our Wilson Rep Dean showed us how he puts Cool Blind fabric to the test by using a heat lamp and digital temperature gauge. A standard PVC screen fabric and the Cool Blind fabric are placed over a light box with a heat lamp directing heat evenly onto both fabrics and left to sit for approximately 20 minutes. After that time we measured the temperature of both the fabrics and the results were indisputable.

The Cool Blind showed a significantly lower radiant temperature than the standard PVC screen fabric. These results will have have a great impact on home owners who choose Cool Blind fabric for window treatments. Inside temperatures of rooms where the sun hits directly onto the window will be great reduced keeping your home and inside environment cooler and more comfortable.

Cool Blind fabrics are suitable for Roller Blinds, Roman Blinds and Panel Glides. They have the same visual benefit as PVC screens but are cooler and PVC free. Cool Blind is protected by Stain Protect fabric protector which makes it more resistant to stains and soiling and easier to clean.

One of the most common questions we get asked when visiting customers in their home is ‘Which blind would be the best option?’

There is no one answer for each situation but to provide a solution I ask a few questions first. Such as why do you need a window covering there? Is it for privacy, to make the room darker, to keep the room cooler – or warmer? Is it purely aesthetic? How do you use the window or door? Is it mostly closed or open or is it used a lot if it is a door. Do you need cooling summer breezes at night? How sunny does it get – does it face west?

Once I have established that information it is so much easier to provide an answer. For example a Maleny customer I saw yesterday needs a blind on her kitchen window. The main reason she wants that blind is for privacy at night as the window faces her driveway. It is not a sunny or hot situation and she doesn’t worry about the privacy during the day. Since the blind is over a sink my suggestion was to use a roller blind in a blockout fabric that can be rolled up out of the way in the daytime and closed at night for privacy. By using a low maintenance fabric like Dawn any splashes from the sink can be removed easily.

A roller blind can be up out of the way when you don't need it or down when you do.

Another customer I visited last week in Elimbah has a large west facing living room that has three windows and a sliding door around the room. A priority for this customer is to be able to keep out some of the summer heat and also keep the room warm in winter. It was a particularly cold day when I was there and easy to see how the large amount of glass allows warm air to escape. The floors in the room are tiled so there are a lot of hard surfaces in the room. To help with thermal insulation and sound absorption my suggestion was to use curtains with a blockout lining that stack each side of the windows. These would give the room a balanced and pleasing symmetry whilst also providing a soft and inviting look for a family living room. My customer is also very keen to keep the products she uses in her home low VOC so we chose a Wilson lining that is Oeko-Tex certified and a natural linen for the face curtain.

One common question that is asked is what would be suitable for a large sliding door. As sliding doors can be commonly used areas it is important that what is used on the door is practical and easy to use. The most appropriate window coverings for these situations are Curtains, Panel Glides or Shutters on a sliding track. Panel Glides are excellent for doors as they easily span a large area without compromise in their function or appearance. The panels can be stacked away over a wall where possible when not in use and pulled across when needed. The panel glides slide easily along the track and can be opened when access to the door is required. There are many options for fabric for a panel glides and can be made in Blockout, Translucent or Sheer to suit your specific needs.

Curtains are also ideal for large areas as they can easily span large widths and can also be stacked back against or over a wall. The options for fabric choices are almost endless and any style can be achieved with a curtain.

Shutters are also a lovely option for a sliding door as they be installed on a tracking system allowing the panels to be stacked over each other. The blades can be left open or closed to suit your privacy or light control needs.

When it is time to choose your window coverings it is a good idea to think about your needs and requirements for each area and put them in order of priority. This will give you the best chance of the choosing the right blinds for your home.
